چکیده

The effects of canopy evaporation and intensity smoothing during rain events on hillslope subsurface stormflow are poorly understood. While watershed manipulation experiments have suggested that these processes are important at long timescales, such processes may also be important in storm-timescale responses. Notwithstanding, there are few hillslopes for which both internal subsurface stormflow generation processes and canopy processes are known, so canopy interception effects on subsurface stormflow have not been tested mechanistically. Furthermore, it has not yet been possible to separate the effects of canopy evaporation from intensity smoothing in terms of which component of interception most affects hillslope response. We report a series of virtual experiments (numerical experiments driven by collective field intelligence) using HYDRUS-2D to model flow in a well-studied and characterized research hillslope in Georgia, USA. Previous work has shown that HYDRUS-2D approximates well both measured subsurface stormflow and internal pore pressures at this site. Our virtual experiments compared modeled hillslope response to rainfall and throughfall characteristic of known forest canopy processes in Washington, USA. The experiments generated subsurface stormflow using measured rainfall and throughfall data from three sites within the forest, and using synthetic, simplified throughfall signals containing either evaporation alone or intensity smoothing alone. As expected, results of our virtual experiments driven by field-measured throughfall data showed that evaporative loss delayed the onset of subsurface stormflow, lowered and delayed

Mechanistic Simulation of Tree Effects in an Urban Water Balance Model

A semidistributed, physical-based Urban Forest Effects – Hydrology (UFORE-Hydro) model was created to simulate and study tree effects on urban hydrology and guide management of urban runoff at the catchment scale. The model simulates hydrological processes of precipitation, interception, evaporation, infiltration, and runoff using data inputs of weather, elevation, and land cover along with nin...

The role of rainfall and light interception by litter on maintenance of surface soil water content in an arid rangeland (Khabr National Park, southeast of Iran)

Abstract The impact of rainfall and light interception by litter on maintenance of surface soil water content is determined in an arid rangeland in Khabr National Park in south-east of Iran. Litter weight sampling is done by 90 square plots, each 1 m2, that are randomly placed within site. After determining the intensity of a typical storm of the region (20 mm/h), the rainfall duration requir...

Innuence of Temporal Variability of Rainfall on Interception Loss. I. Point Analysis

An interception model is derived that links the temporal variability of rainfall with the stormbased description of the interception process. Analytical formulae are obtained for precipitation occurrence with idealized statistical characteristics. The analysis of the results indicates that point interception loss is controlled primarily by three time scales: the mean inter-storm arrival time a,...

On the potential for high-resolution lidar to improve rainfall interception estimates in forest ecosystems

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org T is a crucial need to understand ecological water balances, both in the present and in the future. This balance is currently shifting, as economies rapidly develop and urbanization accelerates (Hubacek and Sun 2005). In the future, global climate change and the resulting uncertainties will only add to the urgency of finding accurat...
